This acorn finial is a decorative item turned for the apex of an hexagonal summerhouse roof, the type that has a right angle at the back to fit in a square corner, then four sides at the front. A photo of the building appears below. The customers asked for a large finial to cap their roof off, so this one is the largest I have made to date.
Given the requested dimensions, the base was turned from three pieces of ash, the largest being 14 inches in diameter, then 10", then 6". The top was turned from a single block of cedar. Ideally the whole piece would be turned from cedar, but at the time this made I found it difficult to source cedar wide enough and deep enough. More recently I have been able to source 6 x 8″ cedar beams, which can be cut and laminated to made a 3″ thick base of more or less any diameter - certainly I have done 20″ versions. The whole of this one was painted by the customer, so it should be quite well weatherproofed.
