Lamp stand

Table lamp

Posted 31 January 2026

Lorna in West Sussex asked us to make a table lamp to match one we made for her a couple of years ago. This one is turned in ash, about 12 inches tall. Althugh we have put the wiring kit through the stand, we have not put a plug on it - we are not electricians. Althugh it is a simple job to wire up, we recommend asking an electrician to wire it or check any wiring you might do as a customer.

Three new websites

Posted 22 January 2026

The New Year seemed a good time to redevelop this website. I have decided to split it into three sites:

  1. oldfern.co.uk will now be the main site for sales and enquiries.
  2. archive.oldfern.co.uk - this site - is now an archive site, with material from 2012 - 2025
  3. trees.oldfern.co.uk - hosting the ever-increasing gallery of over 800 species of trees, plus the gardening log.

Initially there may be some links that do not work due to the reorganisation - some pictures that do not display. Hopefully I will iron out any of these over the course of time.

Back in June a Dutch woodturner, Flip van de Waerdt, visited me with his wife Yvonne, and dog Skot. He asked if he could do an interview for his woodturning magazine back in the Netherlands. I showed him round the workshop and store, with a few pieces in progress at the time, and around the garden. The result is a four-page article printed this month in AktieRadius, number 127. A copy of the article, Bijzondere Houtdraaiers, Ambacht en gastvrijheid (Special woodturners: craftsmanship and hospitality) is available - it is in Dutch, but there is a translation provided!

Our work

We also turn bowls, boxes (in woodturning terms any container with a lid), clocks, goblets and vases, items for the kitchen and for textile crafts, and small pieces of furniture or pieces for furniture. Also a variety of ornamental pieces. Although most of our work is to commission, we do like to experiment with forms and realise ideas, so when time permits we do try to add to our stock of ready made new or popular items.

House Cup

Two woodturners

Steve Fearnley has been woodturning for some years now, since 2008. He works from his workshop at home in the village of Thornton le Dale, North Yorkshire.

His son, Dan, joined him woodturning in 2018, now woodturning in his workshop in Pickering. Together they produce a variety of items ranging from household goods and ornaments to clocks, trophies and artistic pieces. An article about Steve appeared in Woodturning Magazine.

The majority of pieces are produced on commission: working with customers usually via email to realise a design.
