Replacement finial
30 December 2020
Andrew on The Wirral requested a replacement globe finial for his summerhouse. He had already had a new 12″ square base made in iroko, and wanted a cedar finial on an octagonal base to sit on top. Andrew coated the ball with 3 coats of Ronseal Exterior Varnish, which brings out the cedar colouring well.

Jowett Jupiter plate

A 70th birthday personalised platter given by Jessica to her dad Noel in Sleights (near Whitby) . The vintage car is a Jowett Jupiter, manufactured in Bradford in the 1950s, pride and joy of Noel who owns one. The 12 inch diameter rippled sycamore platter has been inscribed using pyrography.

Two similar bowls turned from burr oak, their shapes determined by the starting block of wood. The one on the right appeared earlier this year (3 August) with a lip on it - I decided it had to go. These are for sale.

Money boxes
20 December 2020
A pair of money boxes requested by Jill in Huddersfield. These have a slot in the top, and can be opened at the centre. Made from spalted beech, about 3.5 by 6 inches tall. The inscriptions have been pyrographed (burnt) into the wood by hand, using a hot-wire stylus.

Hollow form, maple

Happy Christmas! This large vase, or hollow form, was turned from the trunk of a maple tree given to me by my sister-in-law some years ago when it grew too large for her garden. It has sat in my garage waiting for it's opportunity. A couple of cracks and bark inclusions, but overall it has held together well. A second vase was made from the same trunk.

Wooden coat rack

A long coat rack for a wall, made in yew using Shaker style pegs. This one is well over a metre long, but any size is possible (subject to availability of yew planks). Alternative timbers could be used - have a look at an oak coat rack . For orders requiring posting, less than 1 metre is advised to keep down postage costs.

Wooden gearstick knob

Lancia Alfa and Beta custom made mahogany gearstick knobs for a local enthusiast who supplies these to Lancia owners. All made to exact specifications. Some fit using threaded inserts, some use grub screws. The Beta knobs also fit Lancia Fulvia 3’s and some Fiat 124 Spiders.

100th birthday box

Richard in Great Haseley, Oxfordshire, asked if I could make a small box to mark his grandfather's 100th birthday. He requested British hardwood was used. The result is this smal barrel made in oak, with a 1920 halfpenny in the lid.

Mantel clock

A pair of candlesticks turned from oak, about 6 inches tall. They have brass cup inserts to hold the candles.
When turning a pair of items, the first is fairly straightforward; it's the second one that is more difficult - repeating the pattern.

Two wizarding wands turned and carved for Sue's boys in Scarborough. They were carved from oak, then scorched. Each has a phoenix feather as their core, making them difficult to master but possessing wide ranging powers.

Summerhouse finials

Four summerhouse finials all based on a ball finial. For Bob in Bromley, Terry in Sittingbourne, and Mike in Leek. All are turned in larch and are slightly less than 6 inches in diameter (they were turned from 6" square blocks, and lose a little in the process). The lower two are a pair to sit on either end of a roof ridge.

PTA trophy

A trophy requested by Jane in Ilkley, no doubt to be won by those partaking in the school PTA treasure hunt. The trophy is made from ash, and is inscribed using pyrographyy. A Silva-type orienteering compass has been inserted in the centre, requested probably to reflect the nature of the event.

Two eggs for Martin in Ipswich. One in spalted beech, the other in olive ash. In turning terms these are boxes - because they are hollow and have a base with a lid. Also two oak acorn keyrings, pyrographed to give the effect of the acorn cup.
Summerhouse finial

A large summerhouse finial made from hardwood - opepe for the acorn, iroko for the base. Heavy at 10kg, due to the high resin content in the wood, which gives it the very durable status for which it is known. 14 inches wide at the base, 12 inches tall.

An oak golf trophy for Tracey in Northallerton for the Catterick golf club. Pyrographed with a variation of the Yorkshire rose inside (their emblem) and lady golfers around the outside. The whole trophy stands just over 9 inches tall and is 7 inches diameter.

House trophy shield

Harry requested a house shield based on a shield made for Malton School some years ago. This is oak, pyrographed with appropriate symbols for the four houses: Archer, Thornton, Szabo and Jones, and hand painted with the four house colours. Small painted shields are to be attached annually to identify the winners. There is space for 25 years.

A finial for Wendy in Duns, which complements her new cedar shingle roof well. She asked for this oiling which I did with Osmo UV oil. A word of warning - this is best applied after a few weeks of seasoning in the open, so will delay the delivery time.

Beehive honey pot and dripper

A beehive honey pot turned in spalted beech to fit a standard one pound jar (454g) - as well as smaller ones such as the one in the picture. For Andrea in Nantwich, as a 50th birthday gift for her sister. Rather than an awkward lid, the whole pot lifts up leaving the jar on a base. A honey dripper complements the pot. Bob in Hook, Hampshire, requested a globe finial in oak. Beautiful wood to work with, though for this size the ball was made from two pieces laminated together, with another piece for the neck and a fourth piece for the base. Oak has more tendency to shakes appearing over time, but still has very good rot resistance. This is a six inch diameter ball, on a ten inch diameter base. Globe finial on square base

Mike in Roecliffe requested a replacement finial for his summerhouse, which required a 14 inch base to match the existing configuration. He also requested that there was a slope on the square, unlike the current version, so that rain would run off rather than gather and ingress.

Spiked finial

A new idea for summerhouse finials, designed to deter birds from using it as a perch - and a toilet! This is a standard globe finial made from Western red cedar, about 5 inches diameter on a 9 inch diameter base. The spike is also made from cedar. There are a few other shapes for spikes that I tried out, which could actually form a complete finial if scaled up.

Bryn from Bampton, Oxfordshire, requested some help in replacing his double acorn finial summerhouse roof topping. An unusual configuration, with an oval base resting on the ridge of the roof, and two finials rather than one.
The finials are 5 x 10 inches, the oval base is 8 x 27 inches. It was made from a reclaimed door frame, which is pressure treated redwood and used to be my old conservatory door. The finials are larch.

Alex in Petersfield asked if I could make a trophy in memory of his father, who was a keen contributor to the local horticultural shows as a vegetable grower. The result was this 12 inch tall, 11 inch wide. walnut cup, complete with a selection of turned vegetables in a variety of suitable woods.

Spotted on one of our daily Covid-19 walks around Thornton le Dale, the mastus erectus has a very upright growth, with almost horizontal leafless branches. Perched high on the hill on the pheasant farm by High Fields Quarry, it has an almost man-made look to it!

Gate post finials
Two large acorns for Astrid in Beverley. These are 6 inches in diameter, 10 inches tall and turned from larch. They are designed to screw onto the gateposts with a dowel screw underneath. They have been left untreated.

Pen set with pyrographed box
A presentation pen box. The pens are ebony and boxwood with chrome fittings. The box is pyrographed with a musical theme to reflect the customer's interest. Have a look at a gallery of pens.
Basketweave box
A box turned, pyrographed and painted to give a basket weave effect. The wood is sycamore, with an ebony handle, and the paint is acrylic. The box is about 4 inches in diameter.

Lindisfarne Castle garden
A picture of a corner of the Getrude Jekyll garden at Lindisfarne Castle. It is pyrographed onto a slab of sycamore, 6 x 9 x 2 inches. Sycamore always provides one of the best surfaces for pyrography with fine detail, with its milky white colour and close grain. Finished with carnauba wax.

Blue tit and robin boxes
Tidying up the garden I found an old six inch wide plank that was well weathered - it used to be decking before the extension build. Ideal for these two bird boxes. They were put up on a Tuesday, and by Wednesday blue tits had moved in. I think it was probably a little late in the season for the robin, but maybe next year it will appeal. Martin requested a 6" ball finial on a 10" wide octagonal base, for his summerhouse in Skipton, North Yorkshire. I left an option to have a point at the top, but Martin preferred it completely round so I removed this. Made in larch as it was to be stained. More summerhouse finials and a finial guide available
Ball finial in cedar
Richard requested a cedar finial to top off his cedar shingle summerhouse roof in Hockley, Essex. This is a 6 inch diameter ball on a 10 inch diameter base.

Pyrographed christening stool
Gill requested a pyrographed stool for her granddaughter's christening. This is in oak, 9" diameter, about 11 inches tall. A gallery of stools and other commemorative items
Science trophy
Carina requested a science trophy for the school she works at, who were holding a Science Challenge day. The flasks and test tube are turned from a yew log, with padauk bungs in the top and a rosewood spatula for stirring. All rest on a beech base, inscribed with the competition details and a school padge. More science trophies.
Cedar finial
An acorn finial for Peter in Bedworth. This one is quite large, the acorn 5" diameter and 10" tall, sitting on a 10" diameter octagonal base. As usual the two pieces are joined together using a double ended dowel screw. The finial is made from Western red cedar, and has been left without a protective finish on it.

Experiments with shapes for tall tea-light holders. The largest is about 12 inches tall, turned from olive ash. Similar heght pairs in spalted beech and sycamore on the right, and a pair of smaller goblet shaped versions in yew.

An acorn finial for Stephanie in Maidenhead, for the end of a row of cottages. This is turned in oak. The acorn is 4 inches in diameter, resting on a square base. The whole finial stands about 10 inches tall.

A tazza is a bowl on a stand. This one was made and inscribed for the golden wedding anniversary of Tony and Theresa in Leeds. This tazza is in oak, 9" diameter, about 5" high, with pyrographed inscription.

Post caps
A couple of experiments with post caps following enquiries. One in the shape of a spinning top, the other based on a Tudor design. Almost any shape is possible for a post cap.

Christening stool
A christening stool requested by Tobina in London, for Milly. The drawing of the yacht was provided by Tobina, and the dedications obviously requested to ccompany it.
Personally i prefer the round seated stools - more turning and less woodworking - but as always we meet the customers' request. In burr oak, 10" wide, 8" high.
Wizarding wands
Two wizard's wands, in the style of Harry Potter's and Hermione Granger's wands, though both are in oak, and I could not find dragon's heartstring cores.
