Description of work

This shield was one of the first "trophies" I created, for the introduction of a new house system in 2000.

The oak base is actually cut from old library shelving, which became redundant when a new library was opened in 1998.

A raised panel was added on the front, with an enamel badge added to a recess at the centre. The four house colours are represented in the background quarters, and four mythical figures were adopted as house symbols: Pegasus for Air, the unicorn for Earth, the phoenix for Fire, and the mermaid for Water.

Vinyl lettering was applied. Small annual winners' shields are added around the shield border, in the appropriate house colour. An additional border was added in 2010 as more space was needed.

The wide price range reflects the amount of paintwork that might be necessary on any other commission based on this shield. The artwork is all hand painted, hence can be quite time consuming.
