Finials for garden buildings
From an initial acorn finial with base made for my own summerhouse, I have now made a number of different sized and shaped finials for other people who liked the original and were looking for something similar.
Seasoned cedar or larch in suitable dimensions is not always easy to source, so my ability to service requests for finials are subject to availability of wood. Cedar is my first choice, then larch, but other timbers can be used, particularly if they are to be painted or sealed. Occasionally oak, mahogany, iroko or sapele may be available. I try to make acorns or other shapes in one piece , but this tends to limit width to under 6 inches. There are examples of larger finials on the site, usually globes, made by gluing blocks together.
Cost is inevitably dependent on details of size, timber and shape, but is likely to be in the range £50 - £120, plus postage (£7 - 12).
Roof bosses fit on the inside of a roof apex, and not being subject to the weather can be in any suitable wood - oak is shown below. For more details, see the summerhouse finials guide page.

The one on the left is larch, the other two are western red cedar. The ball is 6" diameter on a 17" octagonal base. The larch acorn is 4.5 x 10" on a 10" base. The cedar acorn is 4 x 10" on a 12" base.

The two on the left are cedar, the other on the right is larch, 3 block s laminated due to its larger size. The acorn is 4" diameter, The middle ball is 6" diameter. The larch ball is 7" diameter.

Finials are usually supplied with a dowel screw which fastens the two pieces together with a round mortice and tenon joint.
