Woodturning tends to generate lots of smallish offcuts, so it useful to have a shape that can be turned from some of these pieces of wood. Eggs fit the bill - approximately 2 inches wide by 2½ inches tall. I became a little obsessed with these, and decided to make one egg from every variety of timber I had in stock, offcut or not. The result is the racks of eggs shown below - I am sure other racks will need to be added.
In the bowl shown here, there is ash, iroko, lignum vitae, padauk, rippled ash, sapele, sycamore and western red cedar.

One of a pair of eggs made for Lynn in Guernsey, who wished to paint them for her mother's 90th birthday. We provided the egg, she did the painting.

Wedding gift egg

Although this looks like an egg, it fits the woodturning description of a "box" because it is hollow, and has a base and a lid. This one is made out of spalted beech, and is about the size of a large chocolate Easter egg. The egg cup is integral to the egg, as is the finial at the top.
The design is based on a photograph in the Woodturner magazine of a piece by Neil Farrar, who I do not know anything about, but thank you for the idea Neil.
The egg was made for a customer who wanted a special gift for her daughter's wedding day.
Hollow eggs
Bubinga, spalted beech, olive ash BX126-9
These eggs fits the woodturning description of a "box" because they are hollow, and have a base and a lid. They are different experiments with the basic idea - different centres, flattened bases to stand on, and one with an integral egg cup to sit in.
As with most of my boxes, the "lid" (the top of the egg) is a push fit on the base.
Price within the range suggested depends on the choice of wood (bubinga is the most expensive), the size, and how the inside is opened out - a true egg shell, or a cylindrical hole, for example.
