Description of work

This shield is presented annually to a student of English Literature for high quality work and effort, usually at advanced level. It is made from oak, reclaimed from the old school library when a new library was developed in 1999. A book and pencil have been carved and mounted in a recess, carved in a ray pattern. The book has the words English Prize stamped on - this was an early trophy for me, nowadays the writing would probably be pyrographed. The same is true of the Malton School English writing, which was applied here using a computer generated vinyl transfer, courtesy of Mr Barry Miller in the School's design technology department.

The trophy is finished in a polyurethane varnish, again reflecting early stages of my trophy making. Today it would probably be finished in high sheen wax, or possibly oiled.

If a commission was requested based on this shield, the point within the price range would reflect the amount of carving, lettering and detail required.
