Masonic presentation gifts

A variety of masonic gifts inscribed with dedications and coat of arms.

Description of work

These nine masonic gifts were made for the Duke of Connaught masonic lodge (No. 2919). Each has the lodge's coat of arms emblem pyrographed on it, along with the recipients name, a dedication, and the lodge members' "jewel" - their symbol of office. (Names in the photographs have been blurred out to respect people's privacy.)

The gifts include 2 "heavy mauls" or mallets, 3 goblets, two dishes, a gavel and block, and a money box. All are made from acacia, which as well as being a light coloured, tightly grained wood well suited to pyrography, also has symbolic significance for the masons.

For anyone considering a commission based on these items, the guide prices vary according to the amount of pyrography and the detail required. The basic wooden items without pyrography would be around £25 - £30.
