Description of work

This shield is presented annually to the music student who has given of their time to perform and help others over their school life. It is made from oak, reclaimed from the old school library when a new library was developed in 1999.The treble clef is actually from a modified brass door knocker, and accounts for a sizeable proportion of the cost of the trophy. The clef is inset in to the main shield. The Malton School writing was applied here using a computer generated vinyl transfer, courtesy of Mr Barry Miller in the School's design technology department. Nowadays it would be pyrographed on to the trophy.

The trophy is finished in a polyurethane varnish, reflecting early stages of my trophy making. Today it would probably be finished in high sheen wax, or possibly oiled.

If a commission was requested based on this shield, the point within the price range would be determined by whatever centrepiece was required, plus the lettering and detail required.

The shield remains in school and has individual names added each year on engraving shields. Winners receive an individual trophy such as the one shown below.
