Description of work

This chess set is a unique design - "Oldfern Chess". The pieces, in box and sonokeling rosewood, are based on 2" board squares, and 1.75" diameter bases on the pieces. The king is 5" tall, and the pawn 2.5". Different sizes would be possible, and smaller pieces would bring down the price a little, though the time required to turn and carve the pieces accounts for most of the cost.

The board is made from solid 5/8" planks of sapele and light oak in 2" squares, actually reclaimed floorboarding from the customer who commisioned this particular chess set. . Variations would of course be possible. They are inset nito a solid piece of sycamore, which is shaped and rests on a plinth, with the result that the playing surface is about 4" high. The playing area is bounded by pine dowel. The whole board is 20" across.

The pieces are finished with three coats of wax - tripoli, white diamond and finally carnauba wax, leaving a hard shiny coat. The board is finished with mineral oil and then beeswax, leaving a more matt finish.
