Description of work

This cup was made as an award for the best performance by a maths student during the year, in their day to day lessons. This is in contrast to the Maths Challenge Awards that have been presented for a number of years to the students who were Best in School in the UK Maths Challenge competition, in their respective age groups.

The trophy reflects four key shapes in mathematics known as "conic sections": the circle, the ellipse, the parabola and the hyperbola. These cut across an almost conical cup (to have the cone narrowing to a point would not allow enough support at its base), shown by the use of the light spalted beech strips cutting the the mahogany. The base has panels to the rear to add the annual winners of the trophy.
