Description of work

A former technology teacher of The Roseland Community College contacted me with a request for two trophies: one for general disgn technology work, and one for food technology. After an exchange of ideas via email, I took the teacher's idea of something involving a jigsaw, and came up with four pieces made of the materials frequently used in design technology - wood, plastic, metal and textiles. The metal is pewter: it was cast in place on the trophy, into a jigsaw mould routed out of the central oak disc. The plastic is resin, again poured into a mould routed in the wood. For the textiles, a jigsaw hole was routed out, then the felt was laid flat on the bottoim of this hole. And the wooden piece is part of the oak disc. Once moulded, the whole was turned into a convex disc shape - plastic, wood and metal (felt doesn't turn well - it was added later!)

The oak disc was then mounted inside a larger rippled ash disc - quite striking rippling across the grain, vertical on the picture - and pyrographed with the appropriate dedications and school badge. The base of the disc was flattened slightly to allow the trophy to stand freely, but at a slight angle, without the need for any support.

The piece is finished to a high polish using tripoli wax followed by white diamond, then lastly carnauba wax.

Similar trophies are shown below, and more on a gallery of disc-shaped trophies.
