Description

This pair of stools was made for two children christened at the Tower of London. The drawing of Tower Bridge is a copy of a sketch done by the mother of one of the children, and has been burnt into the wood using pyrography. The dedications are also pyrographed in to the wood - a technique using a hot wire stylus, created by passing an electric current through a thin element.

The legs are based on a Windsor design, and are fixed to the seat with through round mortice and tenon joints, braced with a cross wedge and glued in place.

The cost of a stol will depend on the amount of pyrography and level of detail. It could be reduced a little with a plainer style of leg, and joints that do not go through the seat. Rectangular seats are a little harder to complete than circular, so again this can affect the cost. .

The legs and seat are all oak. The seats are just over an inch thick, and are solid, single pieces of timber. The stools are finished with a couple of coats of cellulose sealer, followed by Yorkshire Grit wax, and finally a couple of applications of beeswax paste, leaving a matt finisn on the wood, but bringing out the beauty of the oak colouring and the grain patterns.

More detailed pictures of the pyrography can be found on the pyrography page.

There is a separate page avaialable with a gallery of stools
