Sausage dog

Posted 24 September 2024 A small sausage dog turned from sapele, with African blackwood eyes and a leather tail, finished with carnauba wax. My youngest granddaughter loves Daschunds - this one is probably the first of many. (Already sold).

Acorn trophy

Posted 30 September 2024 Jude at Redrock Forestry requested an acorn trophy / commemorative item for someone as a 10 year work anniversary present. Some interesting spalting in the walnut used for the acorn.

Unicorn horn

Posted 7 October 2024 An unusual request from Huw in Lytham St Annes - could we make a unicorn horn from wood? Here is the result, a piece of ash turned to a cone, then shaped with rasps and abrasives to realise the spirallling.

Have a look at some other unusual turning requests that do not quite fit the more standard woodturning descriptors.

Individual awards for Malton School KS3

Posted 16 October 2024 The annual awards ceremony for Key Stage 3 students took place at Malton School this week, with 23 trophies made for presentation to individuals to keep. These include disc trophies for subject winners, a Young Cricketer of the Year award, a tangram puzzle for the Maths Challenge winner, the House Cup for the student with the most House points, and some presentation pens for the Headmaster's awards.

Plate chargers
Plate chargers

Posted 20 October 2024 Carol asked if we could make a set of wooden plate chargers, based on one she had bought from Ikea some time ago. I managed to find some old oak cabinet doors that made these plates, though not at Ikea prices! Finished in food safe oil.

Have a look at some other kitchen items.

Handmade wooden ghost figures

Posted 22 October 2024 With Halloween approaching, a group of ghosts has appeared in the workshop. Turned and shaped from sycamore, with hollow black eyes, we think they are hauntingly attractive.

Have a look at some other ornaments.

Hand crafted wooden German village people
Hand crafted wooden German village people

Posted 21 November 2024 Jane requested some villagers for an old German market town model she had purchased. They are quite small at just 38mm tall. Jane sent us 3 existing models to copy, we made 10 of each. Jane requested they were left plain, as she wanted to paint them herself.

Zelkova serrata

Posted 21 November 2024 Another batch of over 100 tree photos have been added to the tree database on this site. This latest set is from a visit to RHS Bridgewater in Worsley, Salford, earlier this year.

Have a look at the tree list with almost 600 entries.

Posted 21 November 2024 BD IDS (Becton Dickinson) requested six bespoke business awards for presentation at their FY24 (Financial Year 2024) awards ceremony. Each was themed for an espect of their business - Igniter's Award, Lifesaver, Needle Mover, Surfer, Customer Centric Marketeer, Collaboration Champion. They are all based on a 6" diameter plinth with symbolic elements on top, with bespoke pyrography showing the winner, the name of the award and the company logo.

Have a look in a little more detail, and at some other business awards.

Personalised child's stool

Posted 8 December 2024 Nicola requested another stool for her youngest grandchild, following two others commissioned last year (23 December 2023). The stool is in oak, with Windsor style legs, and has a grizly bear pyrographed on the seat - by request. There is also a dedication pyrographed around the seat.

Robin tree decorations
Robin on log decorations

Posted 8 December 2024 Some robin's designed to hang on the Christmas tree, and one perched on a yule log. They are turned in obeche, which is a hardwood but is very light, with blackwood eyes, beak and tail. A splash of spirit stain gives the redbreast. The photo was taken in some haste, as they were flying off to a Christmas sale. My granddaughter named them Bob, Bobbie, Roberta and Robina

Hand made wooden sausage dogs

Posted 26 December 2024 Two more sausage dogs to go with the first made back in September. I can feel many more of these coming along next year.

Hand made wooden vase
Woodturning wooden vase

Posted 26 December 2024 A tall hollow wooden vase, turned from a block of cherry wood which had a long crack developing along the grain. Rather than trying to hide the crack it has been left and made a feature, using brassed wire packaging staples.
