Door furniture

Door knobs, roses, escutcheons, fingerplates.

We have made bespoke door furniture for a number of customers, discussing their requirements with them and often matching design and choice of wood to their existing furniture. Prices will vary depending on choice of wood, complexity, metalwork if required, and components involved. Below is an example of recent pricing for some pieces made from beech and oak.

Bespoke door furniture

This set was made for a Georgian town house renovation in London, and consisted of 5 pairs door knobs with matching roses, 6 pairs of fingerplates and 3 pairs of escutcheons.

Overall making bespoke door knobs is a fiddly job, so prices do need to reflect this.

For wooden parts only:

  • Door knob (pre-drilled to suit spindle size) £20
  • Matching rose £5
  • Escutcheons £7.50
  • Fingerplates: Large £25, Small £20

To supply and fit metalwork:

  • Door spindle £10
  • Inserts and grub screws per knob £5
  • Backplates (for escutcheons) £7.50

Door knobs

Brazilian mahogany

These door knobs were custom made for Richard in Southport, who wanted fourteen matching doorknobs for his newly stripped and renovated doors throughout his house. Some were required to fit as a pair with handles on either side, though they were not required to operate a mortise lock. They could be made to fit a square shaft for turning a mortise lock.Others were to fit on only one side of a door, so were supplied with just a single bolt as above. The door knobs are made from solid Brazilian mahogany to a traditional design. A screw thread insert has been fitted, into which any length screw can be fixed, for attaching the knob to the door.

Cupboard door knobs

Ebony FN128d

20 of these small doorknobs were made to match a larger version, for a lady who was having a new bespoke kitchen fitted. The larger knobs fit the larger cupboards, but she wanted something smaller for the smaller wall cupboards. The doorknob is made from solid ebony, and turned to a traditional beehive design. A screw thread insert has been fitted, into which any length screw can be fixed, for attaching the knob to the door.

Replacement door knobs

Oak

Following our production of four newel-post caps for Birdsall Estates, we were asked if we could provide replacement door furniture for another aspect of the restoration project. 12 sets of oak door knobs were required, plus four smaller knobs, with roses and escutcheons to match. An old set was provided as a template for the new.

Beech

Bespoke door knobs in beech for Elizabeth in Devon, made to fit refurbished 1930s doors. Appropriate metalwork was quite difficult to find, but eventually we did succeed.

Ebony

Robbie requested 16 bespoke knobs to replace old ones for a restoration project in a Georgian townhouse in London. We made these from ebony, copying one of the old cracked knobs sent to us by Robbie. Genuine ebony is now on the endangered species list (Cites II), but we have a small stock left us by an old woodturner from many years ago, along with other exotic woods which are now quite rare and difficult to source.
