Also known as Patagonian oak, roble, roble pellín (old trees), and roble hualle (young trees). It is a deciduous tree from Chile and Argentina, introduced to Britain in 1849, but now a neophyte having seeded itself freely. It grows quicky and produces good quality hardwood timber, so has been planted in commercial plantations.

Native to Iran, this deciduous tree can grow to 30m tall. It has a smooth pinkish flaking bark. It is related to hamamelis, the wych-hazel.

A large tree growing to 20 - 30m, native to Britain and Europe generally. Also known as sweet cherry, gean, or bird cherry (this is prunus padus in Britain). The fruit is a drupe a fleshy fruit with thin skin and a central stone containing the seed , bright red to dark purple when mature, edible, variably sweet to somewhat astringent and bitter to eat fresh. Each fruit contains a single hard-shelled stone, with the seed (kernel) inside.

A medium sized, deciduous cultivar of the species, which can reach up to 15m in height and grows with an conical open shape and an even, symmetrical crown. It has brilliant double white flowers, hanging in pendulous clusters from the branches. Plena is a sterile variety and so has no fruit, unlike Prunus avium.

P. sargentii is a small, deciduous tree with a spreading or rounded crown. Ovate leaves are bronze when young, turning bright orange and red in autumn. Single rosy-pink flowers 4cm in width. (RHS description). Also called North Japanese hill cherry. A native of Japan and Korea.

A medium sized cherry, a naturally occuring hybrid, between P. itosakura and P. incisa. Ascendens indicates a cultivar with upright growth (as opposed to weeping forms). Also know as winter-flowering cherry, spring cherry, or rosebud cherry.

A monoecious male and female reproductive parts are on the same plant tree growing vigorously up to 30m, prone to suckering. A short, thick bole the stem and main trunk of a tree supports widely spreading branches to form a rounded structure, not unlike the wych elm. The flowers appear in April, the male catkins thick and green, 7.5 – 12.5 cm long, the females longer with less dense flowers, bearing red styles a narrow upward extension of the ovary, connecting it to the stigmatic papillae forming fruiting catkins 30 – 50 cm long, the green, winged nuts approximately 1.8 cm wide.
