Osmanthus delavayii

Delavay's tea olive

A.k.a. delavay's osmanthus. An evergreen shrub in the olive family, native to S China, and widely cultivated as an ornamental in temperate and subtropical zones elsewhere. Fragrant flowers are borne from late winter into spring. It is a medium-sized shrub, eventually reaching up to 4m tall and broad, The dark green leaves are rounded or ovate, measuring up to 2.5 cm in length.

Pinus peuce

Macedonian pine

A.k.a. Balkan pine. Native to the mountains of North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, SW Serbia, and N Greece. A large tree up to 35–40m. Needles are in fascicles bundles of five, with a deciduous sheath, 6–11cm long. Its durable wood is highly valued in construction, furniture production, wood-carving and cooperage.

Pinus flexilis reflexa

Limber pine

A native of W USA, Mexico and Canada, growing at high altitude to a modest height, reaching 20m or less. It can be a long-lived tree, with specimens recorded well over 1000 years old. It is capable of growing in very harsh conditions, often appearing to cling to rocks only. Its name reflects its very flexible branches.

Pinus jeffreyi

Jeffrey's Pine

A native of N America, mainly California. It is a large tree growing to 25 - 40m, very similar to pinus ponderosa, but with cones smooth to the touch (gentle Jeffrey) compared to the sharp feel of ponderosa cones (prickly ponderosa). The two occasionally hybridise.

Pinus pinaster

Maritime Pine

A pine native to S.W. Europe and N. Africa. It is an invasive species in S Africa. It is grown as a plantation tree for softwood timber, constituting the largest man-made forest in the world in Les Landes, France. Originally planted to reclaim land, by its fixing shifting sands and preventing them from threatening fertile farming land. As well as timber, it is also a useful source of turpentine, and is the most important source of resin production in Europe [The Gymnosperm Database].

Pinus stylesii

Styles' pine

A.k.a. Mexican white pine, native of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains in NE Mexico. It can grow to 25m, and is a close relative of pinus flexilis reflexa, which grows next to it at the Arboretum. This is the Girth and Height County Champion of North Yorkshire [Tree Register 2020]

Pinus sylvestris

Scots Pine

One of three conifers native to Britain (the others being juniper and yew). Capable of reaching 35-45m, and living typically 150 - 300 years, though there are specimens reputedly over 700 years old. Sometimes called redwood, and the timber is referred to as deal from an archaic UK unit of volume used to measure wood - a board between 12 and 14 feet long. . The Caledonian Forest would have once been mainly made up of Scots pine.
